Santa Makes the MVFA Annual Christmas Dinner

December 10, 2022

Swansboro, CA

By Tom Harris

MVFA held its annual Christmas dinner last Saturday at the Fire Station.  This event goes back many years as possibly the longest-running MVFA event – begun by its founder, Lois Pearson.  As before, the dinner was a great place to see old friends and meet new ones.  Plus, Santa and his helper elves were here, spreading cheer for the kids.

Thanks to the board and staff of MVFA for the decorations and all the work they do in setting up for this event.  Thanks and kudos are extended to Chief Rosevear and his great team of firefighters for enabling this event to take place once more. Special thanks go out to Frank & Heidi Ethridge for preparing a fantastic holiday feast of turkey and ham, and all the trimmings, including his renowned carrot soufflé and bread pudding. We’re pretty sure nobody went away hungry.

Historically, the MVFA Christmas dinner is an event where ALL residents could gather in the Christmas spirit.  Families and kids would gather around Santa, and political differences are set aside.  The dinner gives us the opportunity to realize that, no matter what may separate us, we’re still families, friends, and neighbors.

SCPOA Board Meet & Greet the Candidates Event, Kicks off Election Season

The Swansboro Sentinel hosted a SCPOA candidate Meet & Greet on December 9th at 6:30 PM at the Mosquito Fire Station. There were four candidates who participated: Melissa Stever, Karen Paul, David Dudley and Meredith Blain. There were 35 members of the audience. Gene Bowen was the moderator and laid down the questioning procedure. The very first thing Gene did was to invite any other SCPOA candidate in the audience to join the other candidates at the head table. There were no takers.

The candidates first gave summaries of their mission statements and why they were running for board positions.  A common theme emerging from all four candidates was their desire to return the SCPOA board to an atmosphere of respect, cooperation and harmony in our small community.

The candidates then took questions from members of the audience. A total of four questions were asked of the candidates, including an interesting question about divisiveness in the community – asked by Carmen Barney.

The Sentinel noted that current SCPOA board members, David Strick and Wayne Gregson, and potential SCPOA candidates Jerry Pullin and Carmen Barney were also present. After the question and answer period, the attendees had the opportunity to discuss issues with the candidates on a face-to-face basis. Coffee and cake were offered, compliments of Eileen Reisner and the
firefighters. Thanks also go out to the Mosquito firefighters for the work of setup and takedown, and to Chief Rosevear for his graciousness in allowing us to use the station for this event.

MVFA and SPA Fundraiser Tops $12,000 for Mosquito’s Fire Department

November 23, 2022 Swansboro, CA

By: Kim Purcell

On behalf of the Swansboro Pilots’ Association, I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who made the Station 75 fundraiser such an amazing success. So many participated in the planning, executing and cleaning up afterwards.

November 19, 2022 Fundraiser Video

We had the pilots, firefighters, MVFA and so many community members working together and having a great time. Scott Reiman worked with the firefighters, Meredith Blain and Melissa Stever put so much time into organizing everything to be able to accept and track the donations as well as setting up the new non-profit organization for the department.

A special thanks goes to our new SCPOA candidates, David Dudley, Karen Paul, Melissa Stever, and Meredith Blain, who staffed the donation table.

Kirk Bronsord with his Bad Boyz of BBQ not only made some amazing food including the amazing chicken that melted in your mouth, but also donated a significant amount to the event. We had about 200 attend and thanks to the generosity of so many community members, over $12,000 was raised. The purchasing of equipment has started, so we can look forward to an announcement soon for an upcoming breakfast at the station. Thank you to everyone!

Be sure to watch this video. See many of your friends and neighbors enjoy the fundraiser, BBQ, and have a grand time.
